Ildikó Debreczeni, founder and managing director of Jelmez-Art Kft., has led a unique and inspiring life journey that began in the world of theater and eventually led to the establishment of an internationally recognized costume manufacturing company. She has summarized her life and professional philosophy in her book *I Grew Up Among Rags*, in which she candidly recounts the journey that led from her childhood dreams to her realized successes.
Her childhood was closely intertwined with the theater: her mother worked as a dresser at the Szigligeti Theater in Szolnok, so Ildikó was able to gain insight into the world behind the scenes at a very young age. It was not the spotlight that drew her, but the magic of the creative process unfolding in the background—the costumes, the fabrics, the shapes, and the unique atmosphere that accompanies the birth of each performance. Even as a child, she decided that one day she, too, would be a creator in this world.
Despite difficult financial circumstances and life’s challenges, she remained unwavering in her beliefs. Her exceptional visual imagination manifested early on: she did not design on paper, but created the costumes “in her head,” using a kind of inner vision. This unique way of thinking later became one of the foundations of her professional success.
After completing her studies, she began working in the costume workshop of the Szigligeti Theater, where she rose through the ranks. Her perseverance, diligence, and dedication quickly set her apart from her peers. She did not view her work merely as craftsmanship: behind every costume, she sought the character, the story, and the dynamics of the stage. This complex way of thinking enabled her to collaborate with the profession’s most renowned designers and become a true creative partner.
In 1995, marking a defining turning point, she founded her own business, which later became Jelmez-Art Kft. The launch meant both freedom and immense responsibility: she had to be both an artist and an entrepreneur at the same time. Over the years, she learned how to keep these two worlds in balance—and it is precisely this balance that has become one of the company’s greatest strengths.
As the business grew, she built not only professional but also human values: the team, trust, and respect for her colleagues were always of paramount importance to her. Thanks to this, a stable, high-performing creative community was formed, one capable of holding its own on the international stage.
Over the years, Jelmez-Art Kft. expanded beyond domestic borders and participated in an increasing number of international productions. According to Ildikó’s philosophy, the key to success was daring to dream big and always reinforcing opportunities with action. She was not afraid to take risks and believed in herself and her team in every situation.
As a founder, she continues to work today with the same passion and dedication as she did at the start of her career. Her work is guided by creativity, professional rigor, and the deep conviction that a costume is not merely a piece of clothing, but one of the most important vehicles for conveying character and story.
Ildikó Debreczeni’s story proves that even when starting from the most difficult circumstances, it is possible to create something lasting—if one believes in oneself and persists in pursuing one’s dreams.
